Panama Canal Locks Railway

This is one of the "mules" used at the Panama Canal to tow ships through the locks. This one, US 53, was in use at the Gatun Locks in 1980. The cables coming out the side of the locomotive are used to tow the ship; the locomotive functions with the assistance of a rack system, which allows for the rollercoaster-type grades seen in the background.

Photographed by Allan Hicks, 1980.
Added to the photo archive by Frank Hicks, April 23, 2008.
