Photo of Entering the Underworld.
Entering the Underworld.

A car-side view of an Orange Line elevated train plunging into the Washington Street Subway "Essex" portal by Ash Street in the South End. The tunnel dates back to 1904. It was connected to the "El" in 1908. The old Boston Floating Hospital, now New England Medical Center, lays straight ahead. Re-routing for the Orange Line has eliminated this entrance.

Photographed by Paul Joyce, April, 1987.
Added to the photo archive by Paul Joyce, May 24, 2006.
Railroad: MBTA.
