Recently, the Seashore Trolley Museum has conducted some maintenance work on car #38, shown here being shuffled around the shop yard for the last time before winter (and snow sets in.)
This is car #38 from the Manchester (New Hampshire) and Nashua Street Railway. This was the second car that that the Seashore Trolley Museum ever acquired, brought to the museum in 1940. The car was built in 1906 by the Laconia Car Company of Laconia, NH.
This car is a very early interurban, designed for the 18 mile run between Manchester and Nashua NH. The car features dark green plus upholstered seats, a railroad roof, and double width windows to provide its riders with a view of the countryside quickly passing by the windows. (At the time, 30-40mph was a considerable speed to travel between cities. This car may look “quaint” and “antique”, but it was mean to move people from city to city in a timely fashion)
According to the Seashore Trolley Museum, “No. 38 has been thoroughly restored with polished cherry woodwork and new upholstery. The rather poorly designed and desperately battered Laconia 9B trucks have been extensively rebuilt, thanks to a generous grant from the Norcross Wildlife Foundation, which also supports historic preservation. Worn surfaces were built up, oval bolt holes were filled in and predrilled, and new bolts and other fasteners were installed, though most of the original fabric was faithfully retained.”
